The famous university Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and
Technology was established on 17 November 1960 in Pantnagar, district Udham Singh Nagar (Uttarakhand) and was inaugarated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It was
earlier 'Uttar Pradesh Agricultural
University' but was renamed in 1972. The motto of the university explains the motto of the university, it is 'development of villages, development of country'. Govind Ballabh
Pant University of Agriculture and Technology is the first agriculture university in India. It is a
recognized and famous state agricultural university. The governor of Uttarakhand
holds the position of the Chancellor of the university. The
university is affiliated to Indian Council of
Agricultural Research. There are around 2800-3000 undergraduate students and
around 500 postgraduate students in the university.
The university is considered to
be the trumpet-blower of Green Revolution in India which ended the
problem of food scarcity.The
university has been actively involved in research and development related to agriculture.
The wheat varieties Kalyan Sona and others were tested and developed here after studying
Mexican varieties. The campus utilised its 16000 acres land for 'Pantnagar Seeds' programme which became extremely successful.
The university boasts of the second largest university campus in the world.
Located at an approx distance of 250 km from Delhi, the university is easily accessible . The
university holds entrance exams every year for
entry into courses and is one of the most sought after universities in the world for agriculture related
study.
