Hanol Mahasu Temple is situated at an altitude of 1429 m in the village of Hanol, 120 km from Chakrata on the eastern bank of the Tamas. This temple constructed in Huna style architecture is dedicated to Mahasu.

Tradition recounts that a demon lived here and killed the people, one by one each day. A devotee of Lord Shiva in Mandrath challenged the custom and prayed to Shiva for help. This ardent devotee of the lord, Deolari Devi, a resident of Hanol, was being directed by God. Accordingly, she sent her four sons to Mandrath, where from a field they obtained four Shivlings. The shivlings were given the names of the four young men. Meanwhile the demon was killed by the four sons and the villagers thereafter started worshipping Shiva as Mahasu.

The temple is located 186 km from Dehradun. The Hanol Mela celebrated every October draws a large crowd.

One of the fourteen reincarnation of  Lord Shiva is Kaal Bhairav. Bhairav-Garhi is the famous abode of Kaal Bhairav . It is situated on the hills of Raajkheel village (17 km from Lansdowne).

The deity Kaal Naath Bhairav is regularly worshipped here. The deity is believed to love everything black, that is the reason why Manduwe Ka Aata is prefered as Prasaad there.

One of the Gorkha named Thapa realised the significance of the Bhairav in Langoor Garh and donated a 40 kilo Tamra-patra there.

Nanda Devi Raj Jaat postponed

The three week long world famous Nanda Devi Raj Jaat Yatra is in a state of confusion yet. While owing to the recent Kedar Valley Disaster, Uttarakhand government has clearly said 'No' to the famous  Nanda Devi Raj Jaat Yatra, locals have decided to carry on the Yatra without taking government's help.
Nanda Devi Raj Jaat Yatra is the outcome of the affection of the devotees of Maa Nanda Devi. The Yatra, which is organised once in twelve years, starts from Nauti village of Karnprayag and goes further upto Roopkund and Hemkund. The speciality of the Yatra is a four-horned sheep. Contrary to other customs of sacrificing the animal, after havan is over, the sheep is set free to move. People from Garhwal, Kumaon as well as different parts of India and the world take part in this holy Yatra. Festivities surround this Yatra and local fairs boost the economical structure of the local people.

It is accompanied with Nanda Devi fair held usually at Almora, Ranikhet, Bhowali and other villages. Nainital and Almora are famous for carrying out a procession of 'Dola' of Maa Nanda Devi. The origin of Nanda Devi fair can be traced back to 16th century under the rule of Kalyan Chand. Worshipping, dance and the ritual collection of 'Brahmakamals' is a routine in the fair organised in Johar region.

Amazing Places in Uttaranchal: Hemkund Sahib

 Hemkund (Snow Lake) Sahib

As the name itself suggests, is a high-altitude lake (4329 m) surrounded by seven huge snow-covered mountains, which are collectively called Hemkund Parvat. Close to the lake is a sacred Gurudwara that is a pilgrimage centre for Sikhs and Hindus from all over the world.

It is said that Shri Guru Govind Singh Ji (the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs) meditated on the very banks of this lake where a number of sages and religious teachers from the Hindu mythology, including Rishi Medhasa of the Markandeya Purana and Lakshman, the brother of Lord Ram performed penance.

Besides tf the Laxman Ganga (alternatively called Hem Ganga) stream that merges with the Pushpawati stream flowing from the Valley of Flowers, at Ghangaria. From this point on, the river is called Laxman Ganga. Cheapest 10 Litres Blue Hiking Backpack
A very popular trekking destination, Hemkund is a 15 km trek from Govindghat. The trek takes one through pine forests where rhododendron (burans), wild roses, ferns and alpine flowers abound.

With breathtaking views of the surging waters of the Lakshman Ganga, the last five kilometres of the trek entails a steep climb from Ghangharia, which is a base for visiting Hemkund.

The lake is about two kilometres in circumference. It was clear, still water mirror images of the Saptashringa peaks (5500 m) that surrounds it.

So what’s the best season to visit Hemkund? No doubts: it’s between July and October. During these days, you’ll find the water still, has shards of ice floating in it, glinting in the sun with the rock-strewn banks of the lake covered in moss and the flowers in bright bloom.
