The distinguished Indian Military Academy situated in the Premnagar
region of Dehradun (Uttarakhand) has its motto
'Veerta aur Vivek' that
is, "Valour and Wisdom". Established on 1 October 1932,
the academy is commanded by an officer of lieutenant general rank. Blood red
and steel gray are the colors of the academy. It is the officer training
academy of the Indian Army. The IMA trainees are known as gentleman cadets and
the first batch in 1932 had 40 GCs. The first batch which passed out in
December 1934 included veteran Army Generals and Marshals from India, Pakistan
and Burma including Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, General Mahummad
Musa, and Lt General Smith Dun. Brigadier Thakur Mahadeo Singh was
the first Indian commander of the academy. After a short term in Pune, the Army
Cadet College was moved to Dehradun and
later it was merged as Siachen Battalion.
IMA completed 80 years in 2012 and more than 49 thousand officers have been
produced by them in India and 24 other countries. The academy campus is 1400 acres. The administrative headquarters is
situated in the Chetwode Hall. The famous Khetarpal Auditorium is
situated opposite to it. There is an IMA Museum which also displays
pistol of Lieutenant General of Pakistan Army after surrendering in Indo-Pak War of 1971. There is a 6 acre
housing place for the commandant.
Several of its alumni have won awards and over 200 alumni have been killed
in action including Maj Somnath Sharma, Lt Col Hoshiyar Singh, Lt Arun
Khetrarpal , Capt Vikram Batra, Capt Manoj Kumar Pandey, Maj Rajesh Singh
Adhikari , Capt Anuj Nayyar, and many other heroes. The academy
promotes all round development of the cadets and prepares them for army life. It is the most prestigious military
institution in the country.
