NGO Sulabh International has come forward to help those affected by the disaster in Uttarakhand
by adopting village Deoli Gram Sabha near Kedarnath.
There, thirty-two young women have lost their husbands in the recent flash
flood calamity.
Deoli Gram Sabha comprises of six small villages. The adoption of the Gram Sabha by
the NGO is an effort to restabilise the lives of 191 residents. Sulabh
Sanitation Movement founder Bindheshwar Pathak launched
"Sulabh Help Programme". He said that although the step
taken by their NGO is very small as compared to the devastation taken place in
the state, but they are hopeful that other organisations will also come forward
to help the people affected by the floods.
Under the programme, women and elderly women will receive Rs 2000 per
month and each child of the family will get Rs 1000 each. Mr Pathak
also told that apart from monetary help, the organisation will also look after
the education of the children, marriages of the girls etc. The young
members of families of the adopted village will be given vocational training
so that they can stand on their feet.
Rs 2000 each were initially distributed to twenty-two women whose husbands
are missing after the disaster. Most of them worked as mule operaters at the
shrine Kedarnath. Mr Pathak said that instead of the tag
of 'Village of Widows', we will make it a 'Model Village'.
Organisations like Sulabh portray the real meaning of helping
hand. More assistance from all the corners is expected to pour in after NGO Sulabh
International's efforts.
